Gary Howard RN MHA MBA
CONSULTANT
Gary has an extensive clinical and leadership background in emergency services and critical care. For the past 25 years he has worked in a variety of healthcare settings from small rural hospitals to large academic trauma centers. He also has experience in case management, quality and patient safety. In addition he has experience in clinic redesigns and successfully opened a new emergency department and contributed to the design of another replacement emergency department.
Most recently he was the Director of Emergency Services at Vanderbilt Medical Center, a large academic Level-1 trauma center that is also chest pain, stroke, and heart failure certified. He was active on the division of International Healthcare and has worked in Haiti and South America. He has co-authored and taught a triage course to a group of doctors and nurses and assisted in improving throughput in an emergency department in a large tertiary care facility in South America.
Gary has served as an evidenced base practice mentor and established a nursing morbidity and mortality conference in collaboration with a physician colleague designed to improve communication, patient safety, and quality of care provided by the healthcare delivery team. He has also served as a consultant for Apogee Informatics, an IT firm specializing in ED decision support.
Active in his community, Gary serves on the board of directors of a nonprofit organization that brings beds, mattresses, and mosquito nets to orphanages in Haiti, Africa, and Eastern Europe. He is also presently serving on a clinical practice committee that will be designing and opening an ambulatory surgery center in a clinic he has worked in located in the mountains of Haiti.
